uestion becomes how do I show love? The passage we just read is so simple and can be embarrassing. The issue is not what does it mean, but more on am I going to do it? When Jesus said, “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” And if we must obey Him, now comes the better question, ”How you must love one another?” Open your Bible and let’s continue with Romans 12, we’ll take up verses 9 to 21:9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 1. BE LOVINGLY GENUINE. True love is genuine. Love is without hypocrisy – must be sincere (heartfelt). If you're going to love people you've got to be yourself without wearing mask. There’s this Hollywood saying, “Everybody loves everybody but reality nobody loves anybody.” Love must be pure:Matthew 5:8 “God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.” True love means sometimes you have to take a stand against something: "Hate what is evil and cling to what is good."Why does love hate evil? Because evil hurts people. It destroys and damages them. If it hurts others then we ought to oppose it. The deeper you love the Lord, the more you're going to hate what God hates:Proverbs 6 16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to Him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community. "Cling to what is good." We ought to spend so much time doing good things that we don't have time to do bad things! 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.2. BE LOVINGLY DEVOTED (dedicated). Be tender and affectionate in your love for others. What is brotherly love? It's the ability to live close together with mutual respect. It suggests a family relationship. Can you divorce your own family brother or sister? "Honor one another above yourselves." Outdo each other in expressing appreciation. Outdo each other in affirmation. We ought to care about each other. We ought to have the ministry of affirmation and not affliction. “above yourselves”, means God can do great things through the person who doesn't care who gets the credit! 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.3. BE LOVINGLY CONTAGIOUS. Full of excitement, never lacking in zeal! Spiritual fervor, literally in Greek is on fire with the Spirit. Enthusiasm comes from being in God. Jesus said in Revelation 3:15-16 “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” God wants you to be filled with enthusiasm because it's exciting … because it is contagious! How do you get that enthusiasm? Fill your life with love. The most unenthusiastic people are also the most unloving people. The most enthusiastic people are the most loving people! How do you keep your enthusiasm? "... serving the Lord." It doesn't say "serving people". Focus all of your service, even ministry to others, by saying, "Lord, this is not about me, I'm really doing this for You." Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the LORD, not for others.” KEY: Everything you do: Do it for the Lord, with the Lord and to the Lord. When you're serving the Lord then you'll have that enthusiasm. If you've lost your enthusiasm what do you do? You just fall in love with the Lord again! (Show the "domino illustration" ... ) Contagious believers are like domino ... impacting one another. Where are you this line up? Are you first, middle or last? What will happen if one in the middle is not lined-up? 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 4. BE LOVINGLY FAITHFUL. Be positive, be patient, be prayerful! Why? Because as Christians … (a) we’re not under condemnation, (b) we're set free from the fear of death, (c) the Holy Spirit prays for us, (d) He's working everything for good in our lives, (e) if God is for us who can be against us, (f) He wants to provide for all of our needs, and (g) nothing can separate us from the love of GOD! The Bible says that we can be confident because the plan of God and the power of God are greater than even the problems we're going through. We can be patient because we know that God's using even these things in our lives to strengthen us. We don't look at the temporary situation; we look at the eternal benefit of that temporary situation that we're going through. How do you get God's loving sustenance? "Be faithful in prayer" meaning be prayerful because you realize your need for Him… Matthew 5:3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for Him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” (NLT) The best solution to pressure is prayer. If you're facing tough time pray harder. If you’re having a hard time loving somebody, start praying for them. You cannot hate somebody and pray for them at the same time. Pray for them and it will change your heart. Pray for people – be prayerful. When things are tough, be patient. Whatever happens, never stop praying. When we have people in our church that are positive, patient, and prayerful, love is going to flow. It's inevitable. It flows when people are positive, patient, prayerful! 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.5. BE LOVINGLY HOSPITABLE. As the saying goes, “You can give without loving but you cannot love without giving.” There's a difference between entertaining and hospitality. Hospitality is a spiritual gift. Some people, in their home, entertain you … and some people welcome you! Some people invite you to please you … some people invite you to be part of you. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.6. BE LOVINGLY GUARDED. Be on guard, never speak evil or negative of others. The word "bless" literally means "speak well of". When somebody criticizes and maligns you, your normal tendency is to criticize them back. But GOD said we have to bless them by speaking well of them instead. Matthew 5:10 “God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” So do not get involve in ‘attacking’ someone … instead, get involve in ‘backing-up’ someone! When some of the people in Corinth were attacking apostle Paul, his response was “I thank God for He has shown grace on you." When the people mocked Jesus, He prayed, "Forgive them for they do not what they are doing." James 4:11 “Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sisteror judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.” 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.7. BE LOVINGLY CONCERNED. Be sympathetic (not pathetic!). Everybody needs understanding. Everyone needs to be listened to. It’s about learning to put yourself in their shoes … rejoice with them when they are on their mountains, and mourn with them when they are on their valleys. Remembering the Golden rule: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 7:12 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.8. BE LOVINGLY HUMBLE. We have a saying, “be humble or you will stumble!” Matthew 5:5 “God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.” James 4:6 “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.” Formula: God is love. God opposes pride. Therefore love opposes pride. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 9. BE LOVINGLY PEACEFUL. Let me clarify this passage: It is talking about a personal relationship, not a national relationships. Personal -- one on one -- my relationship with you and your relationship to me. (This is not a national policy. There are many passages in Scripture that deal with national issues, the concept of a just war. It's talked about very frankly in the Old Testament when Israel was commanded to go in and possess a land, commanded to do battle, commanded to defend themselves. This verse is not talking about on a national level.) “Do not repay evil for evil.” Means we’ve got to counteract our natural instinct to get even. Someone has said, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind!” Either you go down to their level and also become a ‘troublemaker’ … or continue to stand on your ground as a ‘peacemaker.’ Matthew 5:9 “God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.” 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. 10. BE LOVINGLY TRUSTING. We know that it is not easy to trust, BUT we've got to trust GOD that He will handle everything. “Leave room for GOD’s wrath” … means let go and let GOD! To let GOD handles your situation. Let GOD handles your enemy. In fact, God is saying to do good to your enemy … give them food, drink! "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Someone has said, ‘The easiest way to get rid of enemies is to turn them into friends.’ Matthew 5:11-12 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” CONCLUSION: Why be “lovingly” ? When you can just be:Be lovingly genuine. Be genuine. Be lovingly devoted. Be devoted.Be lovingly contagious. Be contagious.Be lovingly faithful! Be faithful.Be lovingly hospitable. Be hospitable.Be lovingly guarded. Be guarded.Be lovingly concerned. Be concerned.Be lovingly humble. Be humble.Be lovingly peaceful. Be peacefulBe lovingly trusting. Be trusting. The Bible said in 1 Corinthians 13… 1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Answer: I've got to be loving because without love, I am nothing, worthless … of no value! All the things I do must be motivated by love! So …1 John 4:7-8 “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
